The purpose of this component is to provide technical support to government officials and train journalists in using data for decision making, policy making, and general community awareness, including results from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS). The project will also work in twenty districts to raise citizens’ awareness and encourage them to advocate with government officials and with the private sector to provide quality health services.

Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2006-07

Provincial and District Launches

USAID-funded TACMIL Health Project supported the National Institute of Population Studies (NIPS) Ministry of Population Welfare (MOPW) for the provincial and district-focused launches of PDHS in Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Abbottabad. Mr. Bryan Hunt, Consul General, US Consulate Lahore; Ms. Humera  Alwani, Member Provincial Assembly, Sindh; Ms. Kay Anske, Consul General, US Consulate Karachi; Mr. Jalal Khan Mandokhail, Secretary , Department of Health, Balochistan; Mr. Mohammad Saleem Khan, Provincial Minister, Department of Population Welfare NWFP respectively attended these events as Chief Guest. High level representation from Government of Pakistan, Ministries of Population welfare and health, USAID, Health programs, Research and Academia, donors, NGOs and journalists attended. Lead personnel, who were involved in conducting the PDHS 2006-07 presented the findings on the main themes of PDHS. Mr. Mubashir Ali, Principal Investigator of PDHS presented the highlights, Dr. Farid Midhet presented the maternal health, Dr. Sajid Soofi presented on infant & child health, Mr. Mehboob Sultan elaborated on critical issues and Dr. Sadiqua Jafarey gave her comments on the findings and the reasons behind this. Mr. Brian Hunt Consul General, US Consulate, Lahore highlighted US Government’s commitment to support Pakistan and highlighted the steps being taken in this regard.

USAID provided the financial support and Macro International provided the technical support to NIPS for conducting PDHS 2006-07. The broad areas covered by the PDHS are: fertility, family planning, childhood mortality, infant and child feeding practices, maternal and child health, maternal mortality, and HIV/AIDs related awareness and behavior. For the first time, the survey includes the causes and direct estimation of maternal mortality at the national level. PDHS survey was designed to provide data for monitoring the population and health indicators in Pakistan. PDHS results can be used as an essential tool in tracking progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5 which are focused on child and maternal health. The event raised awareness regarding the realities in the present figures related to health and population indicators and the obstacles to overcome. As a result, heath professionals will now have access to significant data to better monitor Pakistan's achievements of the targets outlined in the MDG's.

Working group sessions were organized at each event to seek the inputs of participants for improving the existing indicators. Later, the working groups presented their recommendations to address the health issues highlighted in PDHS. These recommendations will be shared with the policy and decision makers to contribute to evidence-based policy making. Speakers narrated success stories from several developing countries in which increased access of skilled birth attendants, emergency obstetric care and family planning services lead to better maternal and child health services. Pakistan can learn from these positive examples.

All events had a basic aim to disseminate the results of PDHS, develop awareness and encourage citizens to support government and private sector for providing quality health services.
